Native to Southeast Asia the White Dragontail is one of the smallest and longest tailed swallowtails in the world. These wonderful little creatures can be found fluttering effortlessly among flower heads or puddling as shown here. What attracted me to paint this species is the extremely long tail that the Dragontail possesses, it was irresistible.

High Mountain Blue
Resting on a Plantain tassel soaking in the last rays of the evening sun a High Mountain Blue beds down for the night. These beautiful creatures can be found in wet meadows across the West, usually at high elevations. Here I chose a dark background like that of a stand of evergreens disappearing into the evening. I wanted all else to be dark or at least muted in color except for that of the stunning blue wing of this gorgeous insect.

The Dunes
The dunes of the Central Californian coastline are spectacular. Here the Orange Sulphur butterfly dominates the painting with their aerial acrobatics. Accompanying them are Western Tailed Blues, Tiger Swallowtails, Creamy Marblewings and an Anise Swallowtail. Dune grass provides a backdrop for the purple penstemon and creeping coastal aster

Comfort in Solitude
My passions for painting are even further enhanced when I chose a creature that has been given a bum rap, and the snake is just that creature. Touted as vicious and loathed by the masses, snakes seem to drive fear into the heartiest of beings. Yet these misunderstood animals are anything but evil. Snakes are highly successful predators and we owe them a great deal of gratitude for their ability to keep rodents and other pests under control. In the West, no snake is the master of its domain like the King snake, given this name for the reputation of predation upon all other snakes, including rattlesnakes. Reclusive and shy, these velvety soft snakes come into action at dusk to embark upon their nocturnal adventures. Here a California King snake tucks itself into a crevasse to avoid detection. As the light begins to fade the busy bumblebees will take their last flight home and our noble subject will resume its' nightly ritual

California Gold
The Golden Trout is one of the least common of all trout species in California but none can match its spectacular beauty. These fish inhabit the high lakes and stream and are truly a sight to see. Here a small group has taken rest under a submerged log. Bubbles spill downward from above as black fly larvae cling to the rocks below. I like this particular piece because of the constant motion that it depicts.

King of the Mountain
The green Hairstreak although sometimes found at lower elevations is usually found high above the tree line among the rock fields. I took a trip to Crater Lake Oregon and while walking the rim's trail I watched these tiny but beautiful animals dart from rock to rock, resting only long enough to rebuild their energy on off once more they fly. This particular individual is sunning itself next to a blue Penstemon growing among the shale. When hiking the high country in the early summer. Keep a watchful eye out for this impressive creature.

Meet me for Drinks
Butterflies are often not shy when it comes to a gathering at a favorite watering hole. Here several different species have congregated to sip at the wet earth. Surprisingly though it is not so much the water that they seek but rather the minerals that the water contains that they are after. This is one of my busier paintings with a lot of little things to inspect. 23" x 16.75" acrylic and pencil on board.

Orangetip
Orangetip Butterflies are sort of the harbingers of spring and for that they retain a soft spot in my heart. Their appearance fluttering along the wooded paths and open meadows signals that winter's frigid grasp has finally left us and we can again get back outside an enjoy the long warm months ahead. Here the Cottonwood seeds fly as a male Orangetip lights upon a Queen Ann's Lace flower.

Purple Copper
This is the first of the Gossamer Wing butterflies that I've painted, but certainly will not be the last. If you ever happen to see this little creature a top a flower, the subtle hews and tones of the reds, purples, bronzes, and gold are mesmerizing. I wanted to capture light and movement here, so I added some floating dandelions seeds just for fun. The light tones of the daisy's really add to the three dimensional aspect of this painting.

The Nymphalids
I don't often paint the foreign species but I wanted to paint a couple of butterflies on a butterfly bush, and when I think of butterfly bushes I think of England. If you want to attract a butterfly then plant this beautiful flowering bush in your garden, with its large clustering flowers you will have butterflies all summer long. Here I placed two English species; the Red Admiral and the Small Tortoiseshell. I went with a soft feel in the foreground with the leaves and flowers and a grainier look for the background just to add contrast.

Waiting
Brook Trout are notorious for lurking under cutaway riverbanks and rock walls. This particular one has found refuge in a dark cavern in to avoid being seen. A magnificent fish the Brook Trout remains one of my favorite species to angle for. Their deep greens and yellow spotting make this one of the more attractive fresh water game fish.

A Family Affair
Orca or Killer Whales are masters of the sea. They are the top predator and like most predators of the world they are extremely intelligent and family oriented. Here a pod hunts together pursuing a school of salmon. These amazing creatures have a wide variety of prey but the salmon is one of the preferred food choices. In this scene one can not help but be drawn into the action although for me its hard to decide who to root for at the moment.

An Awakening
Mornings always capture a special feeling. The way the light illuminates what it touches can not be found throughout the remaining parts of the day. That is what I have tried to create here: A world in which you feel that this is morning's first rays of sunshine awakening our little marble wing ready to greet a new day.

Bumble Bee
Description Sunflowers seem to be most people's favorite flower. They are big, bold and demand our attention. Here a tiny Honeybee is drawn to these magnificent flowers. I painted this in the dead of winter when of course there were no sunflowers to be found. So I had to special order some through a local florist. I had to work quickly as the sunflowers began to fade. It was a bright painting in the long darks days of winter.

Changing Tides
Capturing action in a painting is my favorite element. It brings to life what otherwise might just be a snapshot in time. Here two Harbor Seals rest upon a rocky shore, but not for long, the tides are changing and soon their tranquil rest will draw to a close. This painting has a lot to offer the viewer as each rock is home to many sea creatures ( take a look, and have fun).

Little Girl
Majestic is the only term that is suitable to describe the raptors. Here on a quiet moonfilled night a Snowy Owl lands upon the northern tundra. For me, each painting has a special part that I find grabs your attention. In this piece the moonlight captured beneath the owl's foot is especially pleasing to my eyes.

Moonlight Dance
Creatures of the night and I think especially bats are give a bad rap and are often publicly scorned. But as you study these tiny little creatures one can not help but bond with these amazing acrobats of the sky. One of the most beneficial animals on this planet bats are truly masters of the airways and when you look into their tiny little faces you can't help but fall in love with them.

American Wigeons
I live on the banks of one of California's largest river systems and the wildlife is extraordinary. Ducks and geese in this area abound and this accounts for a large majority of my time spent observing. Ducks are especially a favorite of mine. Here a pair of American Wigeons drift along the rush weeds as morning's first light reaches the water. This is the first installment of a series of waterfowl to be released in the near future.

Japanese Alpines
So often in nature you come across an animal but the scenery isn't quite perfect or the scenery is beautiful but the animal has flown or run off. Well, that's the advantage of painting. You are the master of your world and can create the perfect scene. Here, a small group of Japanese Alpine Swallowtails gather in the rocks along a streambed unaware of any onlookers. Males of this species often gather in large groups to participate in what is known as puddling. The males are after the minerals that wet earth contains. With the angle of the shadows one can imagine that the day is just beginning, with the cool of the morning giving way to the warmth of another perfect afternoon. I hope you enjoy looking into this painting as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Autumn's First Light
As darkness fades and the night reluctantly gives way to the coming day a new world is revealed. This painting takes me to my favorite season, Fall. With shorter days and cool crisp air Fall holds an enchantment that no other season seems to possess. Often when the evening's cool moist air descends upon the landscape a blanket of dew is deposited unveiling an shimmering and exquisite dance of light. When one stops to look at these tiny beads of moisture a new appreciation for just how perfect nature is achieved. What better way to demonstrate this than in a spider web (another one of natures greatest architects).
